SELF-PRESERVATIVE BEHAVIOR AND SOCIAL SECURITY OF THE YOUTH

Summary

The following work concerns the social health of the youth, as the social potential and security of a society is determined, first and foremost, by the level of its social health, especially that of its young generation. Health condition of the youth reflects that of the contemporary and future society. The need for security is characteristic of separate individuals, as well as of families, society and the state. Social health can be defined as the condition that depicts a person’s life potential and their attitude towards themselves or the outer world. Self-preservative behavior is the basic element of social health. Violating rules and norms, actions and relationships of self-preservative behavior, translates into self-destructive behavior. An individual’s attitude towards their own health, which takes shape in the process of their socialization, is the foundation of self-preservative behavior.

Although the periods of adolescence and youth are considered to be relatively healthy periods in the lives of humans, several important illnesses or health problems/conditions develop exactly during these years. These problems can be grouped into: early and unplanned pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections, HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus), psychological issues, road accidents, violence/suicide, drug addiction, smoking, alcohol consumption and nutrition.

According to the results of the research, the gender of respondents, state of their health, healthcare and the place of health as the principal value in the system of values, all have an impact on attitudes toward life expectancy and indicators of self-preservative behavior.

Therefore, in order to improve the existing level of self-preservative behavior of the youth in the country, it is necessary to strengthen youth-related policy and create social guarantees for them; with the aim of improving the health of the youth and protecting their rights in terms of reproductive health, it is crucial to begin lobbying on the executive and legislative levels of the government.
